random memory

I was making sandwiches for lunch, and the end piece of bread triggered a very strong memory to come rushing to the front of my brain. I could see it so vividly, it's like I was there.

I am three, four, five years old. I am at the duck pond in Eureka, California (where we lived) feeding the ducks our stale bread.

Then I can taste Fruit Stripe gum.

I remember being given a whole pack of Fruit Stripe gum and chewing piece after piece as we headed back to the car, and while doing a few more errands before going home.

It feels to me like I had Fruit Stripe gum every time we went to feed the ducks. I can smell it, I can taste it, I can see the colorful pieces of gum and feel them in my hand as I squeeze them a little on their way to my mouth.

In all likelihood, it was only one time that my mom gave me the gum to occupy me while she got some stuff done, but in my mind, feeding ducks and Fruit Stripe gum are forever linked.

I loved Fruit Stripe gum. Especially the green ones.

Ahhh, Fruit Stripe gum. When I was pregnant with my older girl, there was a short period of time when I craved that gum with an intensity that was almost frightening. I would chew a piece of gum until the flavor was gone (about five minutes), spit it out, and then go on to the next piece. I could go through a pack in less than two hours. Every. Single. Day. For about two weeks. Maddening.

Yes! It lasts just a few minutes, then you move on to another piece! That's how it works.
